Non-homestead Millage renewal

The Request
On November 8, 2016 voters in the Comstock Public Schools district will be asked to vote on a proposal to renew the non-homestead operating millage on property such as apartment buildings, rental homes, vacation properties, some vacant land, as well as commercial and industrial properties.

This is NOT a property tax increase for homeowners. It is a renewal of an operating millage which was first approved by Michigan voters in 1994.

Why is CPS making this request?
The non-homestead operating millage which is currently in place is set to expire in 2017. The district is asking voters to renew this millage which will provide 4.2 million dollars, which amounts to 22% of our annual operating budget.

If the non-homestead millage is not renewed, the state will not replace this lost revenue.

Facts About the Request

  • The district’s non-homestead millage will expire in 2017, resulting in a loss of $4.2 million to the district unless it is renewed.
  • The approved proposal would renew the non-homestead property tax levy for another 20 years.
  • This millage request does not apply to a family’s primary residence. If approved, the  millage would not cause an increased cost to homeowners. Non-homestead property consists of industrial, commercial, business, rental, and agricultural properties as well as second homes.

To Vote
This vote will be held with the presidential elections on November 8, 2016 at your regular voting precinct. Polls will be open from 7am to 8pm.
