After earning a Bachelor of Education degree from Western Michigan University, Michele Coash spent three years working in South Haven as site coordinator and instructor in adult and alternative education. She then spent time working at the Van Buren Technology Center as a communications instructor, helping students in vocational programs with workplace communication and job seeking skills.

She joined the staff at Compass High School in 2007 as the Adult Education Instructor. She was integral in transforming the program from paper-and-pencil studying to technology-based instruction. She helped to form the Compass Book Club, a student-teacher reading club that offers students credit. Over the past ten years, she has helped many adults and teens earn a GED or diploma.

In 2005 Coash took a creative writing class at WMU and was recruited to work toward a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing, which she completed in 2009. In this program she worked with award winning authors Jaimy Gordon and Stuart Dybek. She served as an associate editor of Third Coast magazine. She also won writing prizes including the Tillie Olsen Prize for Social Justice in Writing. Coash continues to teach English 1050, the first year writing course, at WMU.

In the moments when she is not teaching, Coash enjoys crafting, painting, and traveling. She is an avid reader and writer, and is contemplating starting a blog. She loves science fiction films, tabletop and video gaming, and other geeky things.
